The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring a Communications Associate to join our fast-paced and dynamic team! Our outreach projects currently include top-tier press outreach, building a network of aligned content creators, creating a series of AGI-focused PSAs, executing a national public engagement campaign, and more.
In the next 6-12 months, we plan to scale up our outreach and campaign efforts even further to produce targeted content for a broad range of key audiences. To enable this, we need creative and detail-oriented talent to drive these projects forward. The Communications Associate will report directly to the US Communications Manager.
Who we are
FLI educates and engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the general public about transformative technologies and their implications. We advocate for policies and approaches that mitigate catastrophic risks while advancing positive futures for humanity.
As the Communications Associate you will:
- Support our robust media relations apparatus: You’ll craft press releases that actually get read, pitch stories that land, and become reporters’ favorite person to hear from. (Approx. 30% of your time).
- Elevate our social media presence: Dreaming up posts that stop the scroll, keeping our content calendar humming, and jumping on trends before they’re over. (Approx. 30% of your time).
- Internal Operations: Be the glue that holds our communications operation together, partnering with designers, keeping internal systems organized, and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. (Approx. 30% of your time).
- Earned Media & Policy Support: Take the lead on exciting earned media initiatives and support the policy team’s public communications work. (Approx. 10% of your time).
Required Experience
- Based in the US.
- 2+ years of experience in communications, PR, public affairs, or a similar field with a proven bias toward action.
- A way with words: Ability to write compelling press releases, op-eds, and engaging social posts.
- Fluency in social media platforms and their associated management tools.
Required Skills and Qualities
- Confidence to pitch journalists and producers with the savvy to know what makes a story “bite.”
- Organizational superpowers to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
- A collaborative spirit and willingness to handle diverse tasks, from vendor management to calendar syncing.
- The courage to ask for help when needed and a solutions-focused mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
- Based on the West Coast of the US.
- Experience in the non-profit or tech sectors; familiarity with project management tools or “designer-ese.”
- Familiarity with the AI landscape and a passion for steering technology toward human-positive futures.
- Experience with platforms like Muck Rack, SproutSocial, and Canva.
- Experience working with busy executives and working proactively with minimal supervision.
Compensation: $75,000 – $115,000/year (varies by experience and geography).
